Message from Cllr Matthew Milligan, ESCC

Record road improvement programme planned

A record number of East Sussex roads will be given a new lease of life with this year’s programme of pothole-preventing work.

More than 40 miles of roads have been included in East Sussex Highways’ surface dressing programme which begins in June, more than double previous years.

It follows a significant investment in the county’s road patching last year to ensure those most in need of repair were ready for surface dressing.

The process, which sees roads coated with a thin layer of bitumen and stone chippings, protects the carriageway from water and frost which can lead to potholes forming.

Full details can be found on the East Sussex Highways website at www.eastsussexhighways.com

A total of 421,413 metres squared of road has been included in the 2025/26 surface dressing programme, compared to 246,583 in 2023/24 and 256,346 in 2022/23.

As ever please do get in touch with my at cllr.matthew.milligan@eastsussex.gov.uk with any issues that I can support you with.

Residents urged to take action over energy meter switch

Residents are being urged to check their energy meters to avoid losing their heating or facing higher energy bills.

At the end of June, the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS), a system that uses radio signals to switch electricity meters between different tariff rates, will stop working.
Energy companies should be contacting affected customers about changing their meter, and East Sussex County Council is encouraging residents to take immediate action when they do.

Residents may have an RTS meter if;

  • their home has a separate switch box near the electricity meter with a Radio Teleswitch label on it
  • their home is heated using electricity or storage heaters
  • there is no gas supply to their area (usually households in rural areas and high-rise flats)
  • they get cheaper energy at different times of day (Economy 7, Economy 10, or Total Heat Total Control tariffs)
Residents should beware if someone contacts them asking for payment to change a meter as it is likely to be a scam.  Anyone suspecting a scam should contact their energy supplier or Citizens Advice.

Consultation on future of local Government launches

Residents are being invited to take part in a consultation that will help reshape local government and how services are run in the future.

Government wants to reorganise local government so that everyone in East Sussex gets their services from just one council. This could mean the county council and district and borough councils would be replaced by a single authority.

Other options could also be considered if they attract wide public support and government backing.

With a new council expected to be elected in 2027 and start work in 2028, East Sussex County Council and district and borough councils are working on plans and are asking residents for their views.

The consultation is  available to complete online at www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/EastSussexLGR/  from Monday, May 12 to Monday,

June 23.

Chailey Repair Cafe – June Press Release

CHAILEY REPAIR CAFÉ – WE’LL FIX ALMOST ANYTHING!!!

Our May Repair Café brought us a huge range of challenges – we restrung a violin, repaired several irons, tackled your mowers and strimmers, sharpened your garden tools, fixed a broken teapot, persuaded a cuckoo clock to cuckoo again, repaired a garden parasol, mended your clothing and much, much more…

This was all in a day’s work for our team of 28 talented volunteers, who tackled all those repairs in 3 hours, with an impressive 78% success rate. With visitors from all over West and East Sussex and Kent our reputation is spreading!!

We now have a good line in Repair Café “merchandise”! Our 2025 posters and flyers are now across the region – if you would like to help us by display a few around your area, you can collect them at the Repair Café, together with car stickers and our much sought after bamboo pens!

We are often invited to make presentations to local groups about the work of Repair Cafes worldwide and Chailey’s in particular – if you would like to arrange a presentation (usually less than 1 hour) or run a display at an event with which you are involved, do get in touch and we’ll see what we can do……

We were delighted to receive a Certificate from Lewes District Council recently in recognition of the work we have done for the local community over the past 7 years.

Chailey Repair Café is part of a world-wide movement where volunteer experts repair things free of charge – although a donation towards running costs is invited. Anyone can bring along broken items or clothing needing repair from home, and have a cuppa and a cake and then watch while your repairs is done in front of you..

You’ll find us at St Peter’s Church, Chailey on the A275 at Chailey Green on the second Saturday of each month (14th June, 12th July, 9th August and so on) between 1000hrs and 1300hrs where we have a full Café service including our legendary cakes! We get busy, so please be patient if you have to wait for a while!

Contact us at chaileyrc@gmail.com and we’ll see what we can do to help.

See you very soon!!

Bus Service Improvement Plan

Updated all day disabled bus passes are being issued to disabled pass holders. They will look like the picture clearly labelled ‘All day local’.

This allows travel within the East Sussex County Council boundaries all day every day of the week without the normal scheme time limits. A leaflet was sent explaining the details to the bus pass holders.

Bus operators have been made aware and have configured their machines to accept these passes at these times. [Note that using a pass outside accepted times does not record the journey – either for reimbursement to bus operators or for passenger numbers]. The Transport Hub Public Services team have also stopped the cancellations from going to the readers for two weeks to try and ensure delivery can be made, there will still be issues with people moving and passes not renewing yet. Hopefully this will be on a small scale.

This change will mean that the disabled person’s bus pass is more attractive for those eligible and supports disabled people to access work and education, a positive step for East Sussex.

Feedback on this change from individuals and disability groups welcome to this email address – bsip@eastsussex.gov.uk
