CHAILEY REPAIR CAFÉ – NOW WHERE DID I PUT THOSE INSTRUCTIONS????

We’re looking forward to seeing you and your broken stuff as we head into the last 3 Repair Cafés of 2024. But may we make a special request please?

There is a tendency nowadays to when you unpack your new appliance to throw away the instruction manual! We know that nowadays many are online, but if you have kept the instructions, take the time to  read them  because it may well help you solve some of the faults yourself. This applies particularly to any form of vacuum cleaner, notably Dysons where you need  to clean and wash the  filters. Sadly, we see too many of these where the innards are all bunged up because the filters have never been cleaned since it was new!

If you no longer have the instruction manual, you’ll find one online which you can print them out and keep close to hand.  Stuff is getting more complicated nowadays and it really does pay to understand how it works – help us to help you and if do you have the instructions, please being them with you when you visit!

Although you can bring as many items as you wish to be repaired, we only permit you to book in one at a time, in fairness to those who will be in the queue behind you. Once your first item has been looked at, you can of course book in the next and join the list – if you’re there early enough, there’s a good chance we can also look at the next one.

Chailey Repair Café is part of a  world-wide movement where volunteer experts repair things free of charge – although a donation towards running costs is invited. Anyone can bring along broken items or clothing needing repair from home, and have a cuppa and a cake and then watch while your repair is done in front of you.

You’ll find us at St Peter’s Church, Chailey on the A275 at Chailey Green on the second Saturday   of each month (12th October, 9th November, 14th December and so on) between 1000hrs and 1300hrs where we have a full Café service including our legendary cakes!

Susses Police & Crime Survey

Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne has launched a survey asking Sussex residents for their feedback on the policing service they receive.

 

Now in her fourth term as Sussex PCC, Mrs Bourne is eager to understand residents’ concerns and ideas in order to inform the priorities in her new Police & Crime Plan.

 

Speaking about the survey, PCC Katy Bourne said: “As your Police & Crime Commissioner since 2012, I’ve been asking you, as local residents, to tell me what makes you feel safe or unsafe. 

 

“I am elected to be your voice within policing so it is my responsibility to ensure that the Chief Constable is delivering efficient and effective policing across our county.

“As I develop our new Police & Crime Plan, I’d like to know if issues that mattered to you before have changed? Please complete my short survey – I look forward to hearing your thoughts and value your feedback”

Chailey Commons Society – Autumn Meeting

Chailey Commons Society will be holding their first indoor autumn meeting on Thursday 19th September in the Chailey Parish Hall at 7.30.p.m.  Ben Crossland from Crossland Nurseries  will be coming to give a talk on Sustainable Cut Flowers. There will be an opportunity to buy some flowers after the meeting.

Chailey Parish Hall is located off the A275, next to the Five Bells Pub.

IMPORTANT ROADWORKS INFORMATION – Haywards Heath Road, North Chailey

 Message from East Sussex Highways:                                                       

Haywards Heath Road, North Chailey

Dear Resident / Business owner,

Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council to manage the highways service across East Sussex. As part of this, we will be carrying out footway works on Haywards Heath Road, North Chailey.

When do they start?

Work will be carried out from Tuesday 27 August to Thursday 29 August between 8am and 5pm.

We will inform you of any changes to the dates or times via advanced warning signs on site.

What are we doing?

These works involve removing the overgrown grass verge to improve access to the footway. Once completed, these works will help restore the footway to its original width.

How will this impact highway users?

We will be working by Chailey Heritage School to the gate onto the common.

The road will remain open with temporary traffic signals in place whilst the work is undertaken.

Information for residents and businesses

Parking: If required, we will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted. Please avoid parking in these locations as it will delay our works.

Weather: All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.

Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process and those properties may experience flashing lights and reversing sirens.

We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disruption this work may cause, however this forms part of our continuing improvement for the East Sussex highway network. Chailey Heritage Foundation – Jumbo Ensemble – 13th & 14th September 2024

CHAILEY REPAIR CAFÉ BEGINS ITS 7th YEAR BY FLOATING A BOAT!

As Chailey Repair Café enters our   7th year of repairing broken stuff for the community, we  have another moving story to tell you……

During the Second World War, a US sailor carefully built a model sailing boat for his little daughter. She eventually came to the UK and settled here with her husband and family and the boat was put away in the loft, where it was forgotten about for 55 years. Her husband thought it would be a good idea to have it restored to bring it  back  to life again. He brought it to Chailey Repair Café, where the combined efforts of our General Repairs and Fabrics team rebuilt the boat – the couple were delighted and the boat, which brought back many happy memories, now has pride of place in their house.   Don’t miss the “before and after” photos, which will be posted soon on Chailey  Repair Café’s Facebook page.

We now have a huge stock of specialist tools and many spares which enable us to tackle some really obscure items and will be happy to try to  repair your  stuff and rekindle those memories!!

Grazing on the Commons – August 2024

The following message is from Andy Mitchell, Countryside Officer:

  • Lane End Common – Cattle currently grazing
  • Red House Common – Exmoor ponies currently grazing – the 4 ponies will be joined on 5th August by a further 3 ponies making 7 in total.  No cattle are currently grazing Red House Common.
  • Memorial, Pound and Romany Ridge Commons – Cattle currently grazing

Several people have contacted me about ragwort which is growing well on the commons this year.  We are aware of the risk to livestock if they eat it but as it is unpalatable to them and there is plenty of alternative grazing, the risk to them is minimal.  Please do not pull ragwort and leave it on the common as the cut plant becomes palatable once dry.

Please let me know if any are signs are missing.  Please also report any issues with gates or fences to me and do reply to me if you no longer wish to receive update emails.

If there are any problems with the cattle, please report this to the farmer directly on 07710 031820.

If you see a dead animal on the commons or roads such as a deer please report it here Report a dead animal in the Lewes district – Lewes and Eastbourne Councils (lewes-eastbourne.gov.uk)

Please keep dogs under control so they don’t chase or worry the livestock.   Dog fouling remains an issue – and Neospora is a parasite that causes cattle to abort calves.  Please clean up after dogs and don’t allow them into the cattle troughs, this water is for drinking only.

Tender for Chailey Parish Council Mowing and Grounds Maintenance Contract

Tender for Chailey Parish Council Mowing and grounds maintenance contract
Chailey Parish Council lets a contract for the upkeep of various plots of land in the parish. The work involved is largely mowing over the summer period but also included in the contract is upkeep of the sports ground in North Chailey. The contract is now up for tender and CPC would like to invite submissions for tender. The Council’s current intention is to let the contract for a one year period to 30th September 2025, however, they may well consider letting the contract for three years in total and therefore, when submitting your tender, you should indicate (1) whether you would be willing to enter into a longer contract and (2) whether the price quoted for a one year contract would apply equally to the second and third year or whether any increase/discount would be applied. Attached is a three page schedule providing the areas that we need covered.
In order to undertake work for the Council, and to be considered for being awarded the contract, you must when tendering attach to the schedule a copy of your company’s current insurance schedule with a Public Insurance Liability cover of £10,000,000.
